iOptron iCAM178M Monochrome Planetary Camera (#3371)

High-resolution planetary imaging with exceptional sensitivity.

The iOptron iCAM178M is a high-performance monochrome planetary camera, featuring the sensitive Sony IMX178 CMOS sensor. With its 6.4MP resolution, low read noise, and high quantum efficiency, this camera is ideal for capturing detailed images of the Moon, planets, and bright deep-sky objects. Its compact design and advanced features make it a versatile tool for both novice and experienced astrophotographers.

Key Features:

  • Sony IMX178 1/1.8" Monochrome CMOS Sensor

  • 6.4MP Resolution (3096 x 2078) with 2.4µm Pixel Size

  • High Frame Rate: Up to 60 FPS at Full Resolution

  • Low Read Noise: As Low As 1.3e

  • High Quantum Efficiency (~80%)

  • High Conversion Gain (HCG) Mode for Enhanced Dynamic Range

  • Dead Pixel Suppression (DPS) Technology

  • USB 3.0 Interface for Fast Data Transfer

  • ST-4 Guiding Port for Autoguiding

  • 1.25" Nosepiece for Easy Telescope Attachment

Advanced Sensor Technology:

At the heart of the iCAM178M is the Sony IMX178 monochrome sensor, known for its high sensitivity and low noise characteristics. The 2.4µm pixels provide excellent resolution, capturing fine details in planetary surfaces and lunar features. The camera's High Conversion Gain (HCG) mode automatically activates at gain settings above 30, reducing read noise while maintaining a high dynamic range. Additionally, the Dead Pixel Suppression (DPS) technology analyzes dark frames to suppress any abnormal or dead pixels, ensuring cleaner images.

High-Speed Imaging:

With the ability to capture up to 60 frames per second at full resolution in RAW8 mode, the iCAM178M allows for effective "lucky imaging," where only the sharpest frames are stacked to produce a final image with exceptional clarity. This high frame rate is crucial for freezing atmospheric turbulence and capturing fleeting moments of clarity during planetary imaging sessions.

Versatile Connectivity:

The camera connects via USB 3.0, ensuring fast data transfer and minimal latency. It also includes an ST-4 guiding port, allowing it to function as an autoguider, providing added value for astrophotographers who require precise tracking during long exposures.
